Healthy Workplace Month

October means changing leaves and breaking out your sweaters, but it’s also Healthy Workplace Month. This is the time where Canadians are encouraged to introduce and incorporate health into their workplace or strengthen the positive practices they already have in place. Since your truck is usually your workplace, here are a few tips to make life on the road a little healthier.
  • Drink enough water. Did you know your body doesn’t tell you when it’s thirsty until after you’re already in a state of dehydration? Avoid the many types of illness associated with dehydration and keep water with you at all times. Bonus: Drinking more water makes you feel fuller and helps you eat less.
  • Get enough sleep. Getting seven to eight hours a night is essential — sleep regenerates the body and keeps you sharp. To help achieve this goal, set regular times to go to bed and wake up.
  • Eat the right carbs. Trade refined carbohydrates for complex carbs, which can be found in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes.
  • Aim for 30 minutes of exercise a day. If this sounds like a lot, break it up over the day and go for small walks to stretch your legs.
  • Set realistic expectations. Body type, height and bone structure are important factors to consider when setting your goals.
We focus a lot on physical health, but mental health is also a huge factor in how you function. Here are a few tips for a healthy mental state:
  • Incorporate relaxation into your daily routine. Block off time to get away from the job. Even getting out of the truck for breaks a few times a day can make a huge difference.
  • Travel with a pet, if possible. Really, what else can make you feel so unconditionally loved and happy?
  • Crank up the tunes! Your favourite music can go a long way in boosting your mood.
  • Bring the comforts of home, like good quality bedding. Bonus: This could help you get more sleep.
